Tactical PCP with a lot of bottle

Mat Manning puts the high-capacity and highly adaptable Reximex NYX Tungsten Grey airgun to the test

The Reximex NYX Tungsten Grey is a tactical PCP airgun with a very high shot capacity, thanks to its 700cc carbon fibre bottle. Distributed in the UK by Range Right, this version of the NYX retails for £915. That outlay buys you a solidly constructed airgun with some great features.

Although the big bottle makes the NYX Tungsten look quite bulky, it’s actually not particularly heavy and weighed in at 3.6kg on my scales. Its butt stock is length-adjustable, which means overall length can vary from 910mm to 980mm. In terms of overall handling, that makes for a relatively compact and nicely balanced airgun.

Keeping with the theme of handling, it’s ambidextrous and the bottle serves as the forend. Beneath its neck is an underside accessory rail with about 140mm of clamping space. Moving back, you’ve got a very nice rubber pistol grip. Steep, nicely contoured and adorned with stippling that really sticks to the hand, it gave me brilliant trigger attack.

Adjustable stock and cheek-support for ultimate gun fit

The butt stock is AR compatible and, although you could swap it out, I don’t see any real need to. The supplied butt stock is length adjustable with numerous stop points enabling you to adjust length of pull from 325mm to 395mm to suit your frame.

There are some other nice features incorporated into the butt stock. Most significantly, the cheek support can be adjusted forward and backward and up and down at the press of a button to further refine gun fit. Beneath it is another accessory rail – this one giving about 50mm of clamping space. And the butt is finished with a grippy rubber pad which feels very secure in the shoulder.

Quiet shooting and secure scope mounting

The NYX Compact’s fully shrouded barrel is 380mm long. That shroud actually provides a surprising amount of sound suppression on the sub-12ft/lb review gun. If you screw off the end cap, you also have a half-inch UNF thread for silencer attachment should you wish to really hush it down for hunting.

Overall build quality is good; the finish is tidy and the Reximex NYX certainly feels robust. Scope attachment is by means of a two-section Picatinny rail which straddles the magazine. In total, it provides around 160mm of very secure clamping space. That’s very generous, and you can see in the images here that I only had to use the rear section for the little Konus T30 3-12x44 scope I used for my testing.

Rapid reloading with a dependable sidelever action

The Reximex NYX Tungsten Grey is available in .177, .22 and .25 calibres and comes supplied with two magazines and a single shot tray. The test gun is a .177 and its magazine holds 14 pellets – capacity is 12 in .22 and 10 in .25. They’re decent magazines – easy to load and pellet friendly – plus they have a counter so you know how many pellets you have left.

The magazine is driven by a sidelever action which is not reversible for lefthanders. The lever has a really nice dropdown handle with a hexagonal profile and, as a righthander, I found it very comfortably positioned for intuitive operation. In operation, it’s positive and reliable and provided fast reloading without any hiccups during my testing.

Predictable shot release and adjustable power

I’m very fussy about triggers – they can make or break an airgun – and I certainly like this trigger. The blade is a very nice match-type arrangement that can be adjusted for height and angle. As most of you will know, I prefer to test triggers straight out of the box, because I don’t think you should have to tinker to get them set up right. This one’s factory setting was good. First stage travel was quite short, but the stop point was still very easy to determine. Although fairly light, the second stage break was clean and predictable – just as it should be.

There is a switch-type manual safety catch positioned just above the pistol grip, which makes it easy to operate with your thumb. It’s in the safe position when it’s pointing forward and you simply flip it down, so the indicator is pointing up, when you’re ready to take the shot.

Maximum fill pressure is 250 bar, and onboard pressure is displayed on the gauge by the neck of the bottle. Now I’ll be honest, I didn’t shoot my way through a full charge before refilling. However, Range Right tell me the Reximex NYX Compact Tungsten will comfortably deliver more than 500 shots per fill, and I’ve even heard a figure of 700 stated elsewhere – that is quite a capacity. When it is eventually time to refill, just couple up the supplied connector on the inlet which is positioned opposite the gauge.

The NYX Tungsten Grey has a regulator, which makes for pretty consistent power output. The reg gauge is the one on the underside of the gun. At full power, the review gun was running at 11.2ft/lb with shot to shot variation remaining within eight feet per second over a ten-shot string. It also has variable power; the power adjustment dial is positioned by the magazine slot and has five stop points enabling you to wind down output up to about a third.

Accuracy that makes the grade for pest control

This gun shaped up to be a pretty solid performer in the accuracy stakes, thanks to its consistent power output, a predictable trigger and what is clearly a decent barrel. It’s certainly got the precision for live quarry shooting over sensible ranges. Running on BSA Gold Star pellets, the test gun was producing pretty tight single-hole groups at 30m and was still grouping within 20mm at 40m.

Having spent several weeks shooting the Reximex NYX Tungsten Grey, I can confidently say that I really like it; it’s accurate, it’s nice to shoot and it’s robust. It has quite a tactical feel to it and the adjustment in the butt section is very useful, as is the extra air capacity of that big carbon bottle. I had a great time shooting it on the range, and it was just as at home in the field.
