Tactically-styled airguns have rocketed in popularity over the past few years and, in many cases, they make for a robust and affordable option. That is certainly the case with the Reximex NYX Compact. Distributed in the UK by Range Right, this PCP airgun has a recommended retail price of £660. That puts it towards the budget end of what I regard as the mid-price PCP category and, when you see its features, performance and build, it’s fair to say that the NYX delivers a lot for your money.
The Reximex NYX is a tidy looking airgun and feels to be solidly constructed. It weighs a fairly substantial 3.7kg and is variable in length – thanks to its adjustable butt section, overall length can be adjusted between 90 and 98cm. Despite being quite a chunky airgun, the NYX is well balanced and I found it very comfortable to shoot.
Although the sidelever is not reversible, overall handling is ambidextrous. The large air bottle up front serves as the forend. Just below the neck of the bottle, you’ve got a generous underside accessory rail. It’s about 150mm long and I really appreciate that extra forward reach as it helps with stability when shooting from a bipod and it’s something that is often overlooked.
The pistol grip is of an AR-type design and is made from hard rubber. It looks quite slim, but it does have a palm-filling bulge and is nicely contoured. You could swap it out, but I see no reason for not sticking with this one – its grippy, it feels good and gives good trigger attack.

There is loads of adjustment in the rear section of the stock. It is length adjustable via a push-button mechanism with six stop points that adjust length of pull from 32cm to 40cm. This is a really nice touch and ensures that shooters are all sizes can get the right reach to suit their frame. There is a bit of wiggle in the mechanism, but no more than I would usually expect in this sort of setup. The cheek-support can also be adjusted forward and backward and up and down via another push-button mechanism. The result is good gun fit and good alignment between your eye and scope whatever height mounts you are using.
The barrel is fully shrouded. It is a nice, chunky shroud and it does provide a bit of sound suppression. Screw off the end cap and there is also a half-inch UNF thread for silencer attachment if you want to really hush it down for stealthy hunting.
Scope attachment is via a Picatinny rail which gives around 170mm of clamping space between its two sections. I only needed to use the rear section for the little KonusPro T30 scope I used for my testing.

The NYX runs what I regard as the standard Reximex magazine – there are two supplied along with a handy single-shot tray. I was sent a .177 model for testing, and that has a 14-shot magazine – the .22 is 12-shot and the .25 is 10-shot. Cocking and loading are taken care of by a sidelever action with a nicely styled dropdown handle. In practice, it works very well – it’s well positioned, just above and forward of the grip, very positive and keeps the shots coming without any fuss.

I really like the trigger on the NYX. It’s got a curved match-type blade which is adjustable for height and angle. The release mechanism is adjustable but you do have to remove the grip to do that – not that it’s a difficult job. As usual, I tested it straight from the box and I reckon it’s one of the best Reximex triggers I have used. The first stage is fairly short and light but the stop point is still very clear. Second stage break is also quite light, but it is crisp, predictable and free from creep.
There is a very nicely positioned switch-type safety catch on the lefthand side just above the grip – perfect for operating with your thumb if you’re a righthander. It is nice and positive in operation and not too loud either. It’s in the safe position when pointing forward and you simply thumb it down when you’re ready to shoot.
Maximum fill pressure is 250 bar and onboard pressure is displayed on a gauge by the neck of the bottle. You should be able to expect 130 shots per fill in .177 and 150 in .22. When it’s time to top up, just couple up the supplied connector to the inlet on the opposite side of that gauge.

The .177 calibre test gun was running at around 11.4ft/lb on full output. Power is adjustable by means of a dial on the lefthand side of the action and that knocks overall output down by about a third on its lowest setting. Being fully regulated, the Reximex NYX is pretty consistent – variation remained within seven feet per second over a ten-shot string with pellets taken straight from the tin. Regulator pressure is shown on a gauge behind the underside accessory rail.

Thanks to its consistent power output and predictable trigger, the NYX is quite an accurate little airgun. It is easily accurate enough for targeting live quarry over the usual sensible sub-12ft/lbs ranges. Shooting from the bench in calm conditions, it was comfortably managing half-inch groups at 30 yards and grouping remained impressive at 40 yards.
The Reximex NYX Compact really impressed me. It feels robust yet is surprisingly refined to shoot and is also pretty accurate. Very importantly, it has a good trigger and I really like the amount of adjustability it offers in the butt section and cheek support. If you’re looking for a tactical-type PCP but don’t want to spend really big money, I would certainly suggest that you have a go with one. It could be just what you’re after.
